What Is Hygge?

Learn how to cultivate Hygge in your home

Q: What is Hygge and how can I add it to my home?
A: Hygge (pronounced “HUE-gah”) is a Scandinavian word and concept that is used to describe a type of coziness that one feels in a space that is well lived in, comforting, and relaxing. Warm bedrooms that you can lounge in and read, cozy spaces by the fire in a cabin, or a dining room where you and your friends gather and have deep conversations all exude the concept of Hygge. However, it doesn't just exist magically - Hygge can be cultivated in a space by choosing the right colors to give it an air of tranquility that is warming and friendly. Below are three ways to add a touch of Hygge to your space.

Warm It Up With Gray

Warm greys convey feelings of peace, restfulness, and friendship. Grey walls in a small bedroom or bathroom can help you relax and remind you of soft winter evenings. Warm greys like Equilibrium or Phantom Mist work wonderfully at creating Hygge when used in classically decorated bathrooms that have clawfoot bathtubs, or in cozy living rooms that have a dedicated reading space.

Rustically Red

Ruddy-oranges, burgundies, and wine-colored reds give off a feeling of warmth and togetherness when used in dining rooms and kitchens where the family can gather for a meal or a cup of coffee. These deep, reflective red paint colors are also perfect for use in a living room or a study where one may enjoy a good book or sit near a fire. Choose a gorgeous paint color like Rum Raisin to help create a space that is tranquil and brimming with Hygge.

Don’t Forget The Outside

When thinking about the colors of your home, do not forget the trim. Adding a touch of exterior paint in the right color can help increase the Hygge for the entire house. Consider adding a brilliant crimson like Red Gumball to your exterior shutters or a rich black like our 2018 color of the year, Black Magic, to your front door.
