Reviews
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Honey Gold I thoroughly cleaned my Douglas fir deck with Olympic deck cleaner and a scrub brush, then rinsed it well; just as I have done for the past 10 years. I liberally applied the Honey-Gold tinted Olympic WaterGuard (the tint brings out the character of the wood grain) using a soft scrub brush attached to a long handle. I let it soak in and brushed out any pooling. It was all a stand-up operation. I do this every year and am very satisfied with the results. The deck stays water-proof well past the year mark and it does not fade. I have found that if you do not clean it well beforehand, the residue from the last application will actually inhibit penetration of the new application and that will affect the durability of it as well. I have also used a pressure-washer as a preparation in the past, but the scrub brush seems to actually work better for me and it's less trouble. After all, I have to wash the deck periodically anyhow, so why not follow with a fresh application of waterproofing? Other wise, following the instructions on the WaterGuard container is essential. My deck is about 30 years old and I always get compliments on it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Natural, no color added We tried a number of products on our deck, (which had been previously neglected). Unfortunately, what we chose did not last. It was suggested I use a boiled linseed oil to coat the deck. I wanted something that had some form of UV protection. I searched and finally found Olympic Waterguard which was reasonably priced and had the protection I was looking for. After sanding the neglected deck to smooth it, I applied two coats of Olympic Waterguard. It was extremely easy to apply with a roller and it coated extremely well. Olympic Waterguard soaked into the wood leaving a natural finish that left the deck looking like unfinished wood. The first rain showed the level of protection/water repellent as the water beaded up and ran off the deck. The only drawback to this product is it needs to be re-applied yearly, but with the ease of application, it is worth it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Olympic Waterguard Honey Gold After years of using Thompson's Waterseal, I decided to try another name brand, Olympic. I liked the 2.5 gallon container, and that it came in the "honey" color that I love. What a waste of 6 hours of my time. My husband and I are veteran deck sealers who have done this chore about 10 times or more over the years. After applying two coats to our deck (with dry time in between), I was anxious to see the rain bead on top of our newly sealed deck. After 4 days it has rained...what a disappointment. The rain has soaked into the wood, even though this product claims to be a water "repellent". Don't waste your money, or time, on this product if you are looking for a product to seal your deck from water. I will be doing this chore again, in the late spring using Thompson's Waterseal. What really makes me mad is the planning that goes into a chore like this. You have to find the right day (right temperature during the day...and night, no rain for at least 2 days after application) to apply it. So, after finding the perfect fall weekend to do it... only to see that it didn't even work.... so very frustrating.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Honey Gold, Clear After trying other brands on our first deck and getting poor results we switched to Olympic. We always tried to achieve that new deck look. With the older oil base products the color was too dark, but lightened over many years. With the new water based products we experimented and mixed 2.5 gallons of Honey Gold with 5 gallons of clear. It gave us the color we were looking for and the results over time. Our deck is near the Great Lakes and gets splashed frequently as well as iced over. We wish Olympic would have a color with this mix ratio or available in 1-gallon containers. We found out it does not store well after opening.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Clear Yesterday I spent 6-7 hours putting Olympic WaterGuard on my deck. It rained this evening and the water did not bead up at all on the deck. It's like I did nothing! Is this the way it's supposed to be? From reading the other reviews I feel like I just wasted my time and will have to do it over again. Ahhhhhhh! All those railings and slats. Help!
