2017 Home Decorating Ideas

5 home projects you can complete in January and enjoy all year

This year, throw away the obligatory soul searching for big resolutions and try tackling a few small interior decorating ideas to set the tone for 2017. Here are five interior design ideas that require little time and financial investment and, unlike your resolutions, will be around all year.

Gain a fresh outlook with window treatments: Windows frame your view in every season. Increase the natural light in a room and expand your view by changing drapes to simple valances or roman shades. Or draw the eye to the windows by adding fabric cornices or plantation shutters. Whatever you decide, you’ll be surprised by the difference this easy change can make.

Get a clean start in the laundry room: You probably spend more time than you’d like in this room. With little time and effort, you can make it more functional and pleasant. Start with a thorough cleaning: wipe down walls, floors and machines with a mild cleaner mixed with warm water. Blow out the dryer vent tubing with a leaf blower. This will help eliminate fly-away lint and can reduce drying time. Lastly, add some baskets or shelving to arrange items and stay organized the rest of the year.

Make a statement with your mailbox: Don’t overlook this small, practical object. It can make a big statement if you let it. Try replacing a plain mailbox with one that is unique and eye catching. Or paint your mailbox a bright color that contrasts with your house. For example, a red such as Calypso Berry will stand out against most houses and will be a bright spot at the end of your day— even on dark winter evenings.

Lighten up with new lamps and bulbs: Find shadowy, dim spaces around the house and brighten them by adding floor or table lamps. In closets and under cabinets, consider using LED mounted strips or battery operated stick-on lighting. A year without confusing black and navy has to be a good one right?

Set the mood with a freshly painted room: A fresh coat of paint can change your mood as well as the personality of a room. Pick a room that feels stale and give it a facelift. Spend a minute thinking about the mindset you’re striving for this year. Happier? Try a yellow such as Fuzzy Navel. Calmer? A gray blue such as Heavenly Blue can help you relax.
