DIY Outdoor Lattice in 4 Easy Steps

Try this lattice stain project on your patio

A simple DIY project, like this stain lattice plant holder, can transform your patio or balcony. In only four simple steps, a gorgeous lattice can add a completely new look to your outdoor space.

Step 1.

Purchase the wood lattice. You can find it at most home improvement stores.

Step 2.

Choose a stain color that matches your deck—if that’s where it’s going. Or choose a shade that will stand out against your siding to add a pop to the front of your house. You have many stain options. We used Olympic Elite Timberline Semi-Transparent.

Step 3.

Lay a tarp on the ground and place the lattice on top. For clear, toner, and semi-transparent stains, apply one thin coat with a high-quality brush, roller, paint pad, or sprayer.

For solid stains, apply two thin coats with a brush, roller, or paint pad. We used a brush, which was great for the small, hard-to-reach areas. You can use a sprayer in combination with a brush.

Step 4.

Stain one side at a time and allow the first side to fully dry before starting on the other side. Once both sides are dry, you can decorate the lattice.

We purchased small wooden crates and stained them the same color as the lattice. Then we drilled the wooden baskets onto the lattice and filled them with plants to create small flower boxes.

You can add a punch of color with flower baskets or turn it into an herb holder and place it a few steps from your kitchen door. Or, don’t add pots and just let a bright green vinca vine decorate it.
