Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not Happy with Finish At All! I have been staining wood for years, and have used many different products depending on each individual project. I decided to build some raised garden beds this week, so I purchased Olympic Maximum based on the recommendation of the clerk at the local big box store. I was told clean-up was much easier, and that the product is water-based, so it is better for the environment. well...I purchased standard southern pine for the project, and sanded all of the boards before staining to insure they were smooth and splinter-free. Then, I began staining all of the wood. I applied the stain with a brush, and used a thin coat as the directions stated. The finish was splotchy and uneven at beast, plus it was nowhere near the color indicated on the color chart or the label. I immediately brushed on a second coat (before the first coat dried), and as it soaked in, it did darken the color slightly, but definitely nowhere close to the color chart or label. After allowing all of the boards to dry for 24 hours, they still look splotchy and uneven, and the finish looks terrible. It has an oily feel when you touch the wood, some places are slightly sticky, and the color is almost a bright orange instead of the Cedar Naturaltone it was supposed to be. Keep in mind, this is after 24 full hours of drying time. It is hard to see how splotchy it is in the pictures I have furnished, but it is VERY uneven. I am heartbroken, because I spent a lot of money on these boards, and now I am stuck with something that I am afraid to complete because I feel like this product is not going to protect this wood at all. Not to mention, I am horrified at the color it turned out. After doing some research online, it appears that I will have to literally sand off the old finish in order to apply something different...which means even more work. The only positive comment I can make about this product is that it is very easy to clean off your hands and brush....in fact, it came off so easily, I am wondering how well it will stay on my boards. Shame on you, Olympic for selling a product that is this inferior...and that causes so much extra work and expense. You can bet I will not be buying Olympic again after this.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from The 10 Year Warranty is USELESS Just applied to a very large 1200 sq ft deck at the end of last summer. We followed the directions meticulously. We allowed the news deck to cure for a year. We cleaned the wood. Allowed it to dry. Waited for the perfect weather conditions to apply. Applied two coats. Summer hasn’t even started yet and the stain is so peeled and scuffed they the deck is embarrassing. the thought of trying to remove and replace all of this is so incredibly disappointing and anxiety producing. The warranty explicitly excludes labor associated with the removal application, which is is absurd. This Olympic stain ruined our brand new deck :(

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of Time and Money - worst Olympic Stain ever We have always been 100% satisfied with Olympic deck, fence & siding stain, having used it on the exterior of our current 150+ year old Nova Scotia wood shingled house and our last one, 200+ years old with perfect results, recoating after 10+ years only because we wanted to change the colour. Five years ago, we had a local highschool art class use 5+ colours of Olympic deck, fence & siding stain to paint our airstream trailer to look like a sheep, still perfect. We painted over layers of old paint on this house ten years ago and it is still looking good. We've painted metal, plastic, concrete .... never disappointed. After my sister used it on her abitibi siding 10+ years ago, still perfect she used the leftover to coat her basement floor - still perfect. So last spring when we wanted to protect our new deck built in 2016 we expected the same quality from Olympic Maximum. We followed directions and applied two coats. What a mess! It has pealed and blistered and scuffed up, looks worse every day and will now have to be scraped off. The deck faces south east, so unless it is meant to be only applied on cloudy days guaranteed not to rain - we do not have these in Nova Scotia - there would be no day any month warm enough outside to apply this stain that it might not possibly get too hot. This stain might work in the shade but definately does not work in an area that gets sun. This is one big disappointment!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very disappointing performance After spending a couple of weekends stripping down my old deck last April, I used this finish to give it a nice color. It looked pretty good for a few months, but started peeling in some places before the first snowfall. Just one year later, just about every plank has cracked and peeling paint. The whole thing looks awful and I need to pain again - not even one year out of this product.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed i bought this product 5 years ago for a new porch and it covered in 1 coat but applied 2 for best protection. 2 weeks ago I bought the same stain in white to repaint a porch already painted white from 5 years earlier. The old paint was prepped by sanding and washing with a suds-free detergent. There was some gray staining of the old finish but the vast majority of the wood was white and still, using the Maximum white stain, coverage was very poor, having to apply 2-3 coats to cancel out the grey underneath.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Peeling Off Deck Deck was Professionally Sanded In September, 2017 at a cost of $800 down to the bare wood. Following instructions from Lowe's Paint Department, I was advised that Olympic Maximum Stain Sealant with 10 Yr Protection, Only one coat would be needed and could be applied to the deck, which I did in October, 2017. Please note it was completely dry by the time the stain was applied. As you can see from the attached pictures, the deck stain is already peeling in numerous spots. The furniture has not even been put on the deck since it was stained. There are additional spots on the railing as well where the stain is leaching thru.
